New Initiatives

New Initiatives serves as a way for the Deacons to explore serving the congregation and community in new ways that may fall outside of our traditional ministries of Benevolence, Congregational Care, Hospitality, and Visitation.  Most recently, New Initiatives is working with our Missions committee to further develop the Local Ministry service opportunities.  However, over the past two years, New Initiatives has worked on the following endeavors:

Fall 2011 – “Fall Festivus” – Deacons organized a gathering of the MPC community for a walk/run at Ridley Park followed by a chili cook-off and pie baking contest.  An unlikely Halloween snowstorm kept participation low, but hopefully a tradition has been started.  Proceeds went to an inner-city food bank.

Spring 2011 – “5k2Care4Kids” – Deacons assisted Compassion Corps with their inaugural 5k race held at Ridley Creek State Park.  While the race was organized by Compassion Corps, the New Initiatives team dedicated many hours of hard work to ensure the event was a success.  Proceeds benefited orphanages in Haiti and Liberia.

Winter 2011 and 2010 – “Lenten Giving” – Deacons collected business clothing for Outfits for Offices, children’s books for T.M. Thomas, art supplies for Christ Presbyterian, and winter jackets for Philadelphia’s homeless.

Fall 2010 – “Gobbles for God” – Deacons collected enough funds and non-perishables to provide full Thanksgiving dinners to over 50 families in the Chester neighborhood surrounding T.M. Thomas.

If you have any New Initiatives that you would like to see the Deacons become a part of, please contact the church office.
