Daily Devotions for Lent 2012

Day 44

Thursday, April 5, 2012

Submitted by Rev. Craig Bean

Father, in time of distress in my life, give the comfort of forgiveness. In time of darkness give hope, in time of sickness give quiet courage; and when my heart is bowed down, and my soul is very heavy, and life is a burden, then may Your Spirit, the Comforter, come. By Your mercy, lift me up, through Jesus Christ the Lord – Amen.

Scripture Reference:  Psalm 142

Today’s Devotion

Today is Maundy Thursday. Among many other events on this day, we remember that Jesus was betrayed and abandoned by His friends.  In Psalm 142, David is unjustly pursued, his life is in danger and he cries for help in the middle of this emotional low. Sometimes it feels like God has left us alone just when we need Him the most. In this Psalm, David keeps pursuing God, believing. On Maundy Thursday night, Jesus asks, “Maybe I could skip what’s coming next,” but Friday comes and Jesus suffers and is abandoned by God to the cross and death. When Sunday arrives, Jesus is no longer in the grave. His resurrection is for you and assures us that especially in the darkest moments, God is present.
